Posted on Author RachelComments Off on “Thor: Ragnarok” Continues Box Office Reign
Disney-Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok is set to continue its reign at the box office in its second weekend with $61.3 million at 4,080 North American locations.
Fox’s Agatha Christie adaptation Murder on the Orient Express will open nearly neck-and-neck with Paramount’s comedy sequel Daddy’s Home 2, with “Murder” looking to bring in around $28.1 million from 3,341 locations and “Daddy’s 2” to pull in $27.3 million from 3,575 sites.
The third Thor movie ended a monthlong box office slump last weekend when it opened with $122.7 million, the fourth-best launch of 2017, so a decline of under 50% is well above the norm. Directed by Taika Waititi, “Thor: Ragnarok” stars Chris Hemsworth as the title character, with Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, and Jeff Goldblum. (Source)
Posted on Author RachelComments Off on Chris Shares In Memoriam Tribute to Mjolnir
One of the major developments in Thor: Ragnarok was spoiled in the film’s very first trailer: the fact that Thor’s beloved hammer Mjolnir is destroyed. This wasn’t a huge spoiler as the development happens early in the film, but it is a great example of how Marvel and director Taika Waititi decided to strip Chris Hemsworth’s superhero of pretty much everything to bring the character down to his basics. By the film’s end the loss of Mjolnir makes sense and the journey that Thor has gone on has not only made him a better person, but also a stronger one. Still, it may be a little weird to see Thor without his hammer in upcoming Marvel movies (unless they bring it back, which is entirely possible but would be a bummer), and given that Hemsworth knows just how much Mjolnir meant to Thor, he shared a really funny “In Memoriam” tribute video to his beloved hammer.
The video features clips from Thor’s time in the MCU wielding his weapon of choice before wrapping up with one of the funniest bits from Thor: Ragnarok (so yes, this is actually a piece of marketing disguised as a “fun” video—but it’s still fun!). The only major ‘complaint’ is they didn’t include Kat Dennings saying “meow meow”, during Thor: The Dark World.
Anway, check out the Mjolnir tribute video below, and if you haven’t seen Thor: Ragnarok yet do it. It’s delightful. (Source)
Posted on Author RachelComments Off on “Thor: Ragnarok” Dominates Box Office Opening Weekend
Thor: Ragnarok may spell trouble for the realm of Asgard, but it brings good news for the box office. Disney and Marvel’s third solo movie starring Chris Hemsworth as the god of thunder is on track to gross an estimated $121 million in the U.S. and Canada over its first weekend, easily conquering the competition while heralding Hollywood’s first big opening in several weeks.
Ragnarok‘s haul represents the fourth-largest debut of 2017, behind Beauty and the Beast ($174.8 million), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ($146.5 million), and It ($123.4 million). It also crushes the openings of 2011’s Thor ($65.7 million) and 2013’s Thor: The Dark World ($85.7 million), and edges out the most recent installment of the Marvel cinematic universe, Spider-Man: Homecoming ($117 million).
Directed by with a distinctly humorous tone by Taika Waititi and boasting a powerhouse cast — including Cate Blanchett, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddeslton, and Tessa Thompson — Ragnarok received glowing reviews and garnered an A CinemaScore, indicating good word of mouth. The threequel, which reportedly cost $180 million to make, has likewise fared well overseas, tallying about $306 million since it began rolling out last week. (Source)

Posted on Author RachelComments Off on “Thor: Ragnarok” Thundering to $118M US Debut
Notch another victory for Disney and Marvel Studios.
Nabbing an A CinemaScore, Thor: Ragnarok grossed a thunderous $46.8 million on Friday for a projected $117 million-$118 million U.S. debut, well ahead of the first two films and one of the top showings of the year to date. Among 2017 superhero titles, Spider-Man: Homecoming opened to $117 million this summer, while Wonder Woman launched to $103.3 million. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is tops with $146.5 million.
Overseas, Thor: Ragnarok is also making headlines in China and other major markets, grossing north of $200 million to date internationally (it began rolling out offshore last weekend).
Directed by acclaimed New Zealand filmmaker Taika Waititi, the threequel stars Chris Hemsworth as the god of thunder alongside franchise regulars Tom Hiddleston, Idris Elba and Anthony Hopkins. Thor: Ragnarok is also cross-pollinated with fellow Marvel superheroes The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), while Cate Blanchett stars as the villainous Hela, goddess of death. Posted on Author RachelComments Off on “Thor: Ragnarok” Critics Reviews
The latest Marvel film, Thor: Ragnarok hit theatres this weekend. Directed by Taika Waititi, the movie features an all-star cast of Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston, Tessa Thompson and Cate Blanchett. I saw the movie this weekend and loved it! Take a look below at what the critics have to say about the film:
Empire — For the first time in 17 (count them) movies, Marvel has delivered something that isn’t an action movie leavened with humour, but a full-bore comedy using blockbuster spectacle as a backdrop for gags. Ragnarok’s humour is as broad as it is eccentric, preserving Waititi’s sensibility while delivering consistent belly laughs at every turn. There are wank jokes, arse puns, vampire gags, pratfalls, in-jokes, snarky asides and buffoonery to suit every palate.
USA Today — Infused with Waititi’s “signature goofiness,” Thor: Ragnarok is “by far the best of the solo films” starring Hemsworth “as the hammer-wielding warrior. It’s zany to a fault, though: The adventure leans hard into the campy Flash Gordon vibe and slapstick humor, so much so that when the third act save-the-world stuff comes, it doesn’t feel completely earned.
Entertainment Weekly — The newest — and unquestionably funniest — big-screen Marvel adventure, Thor: Ragnarok, seems hellbent on finally unleashing Hemsworth’s real secret weapon: his humor. With the exception of Deadpool and the Guardians of the Galaxy films, Ragnarok may be the only Marvel-hero movie that feels like it’s first and foremost a comedy. And on those terms — and those terms only — it’s a triumph.
Roger Ebert — I wouldn’t have picked Chris Hemsworth as Marvel’s breakout comedy star when he was first cast as Thor, God of Thunder, but he turned out to be one of the best things about this never-ending mega-franchise. This is a close-but-no-cigar movie, but so enjoyable for the most part, and so modest in its aims, that its disappointments aren’t devastating. I’d watch the first 90 minutes again anytime.
