“The Huntsman: Winter’s War” Critics Reviews

Chris’ latest film, The Huntsman: Winter’s War hit theatres this weekend. Directed by Cedric Nicolas-Trojan, the movie features an all-star cast of Emily Blunt, Jessica Chastain and Charlize Theron. Take a look below at what the critics have to say about the film:

RogerEbert.com — Individually appealing as they are, Chris Hemsworth and Jessica Chastain have zero chemistry with each other. Their love scenes are actively uncomfortable to watch. Their flirty banter isn’t much better, and only in part because they’re speaking in inconsistent Scottish accents. The costumes are mind-bogglingly beautiful, though.

RollingStone.com — The script lifts so much plot from Disney’s animated Frozen that it could qualify as a remake. [Charlize] Theron and [Emily] Blunt try to out-camp each other, providing the only glimmer of entertainment in a film dedicated to being ponderous. No one sings “Let It Go,” but my advice to audiences is to do just that before mistakenly buying a ticket.

EntertainmentWeekly.com — Winter’s War was directed by Cedric Nicolas-Troyan, the man behind Snow White and the Huntsman’s Oscar-nominated special effects. And even if you didn’t know that, you could have guessed it. Because that’s exactly how he approaches the movie, doubling down on style over substance. It needs to touch your heart, not just your retinas. There needs to be urgency, shape, and emotional investment. In a word, a script. Otherwise, it’s just a two-hour Vogue fashion shoot highlighted by Emily Blunt riding bareback on a polar bear.

Vulture.com — The only reason to subject yourself to The Huntsman: Winter’s War, a mush of Game of Thrones and Disney’s Frozen with CGI that looks uncannily like CGI, is Emily Blunt, who gives the nearest thing I’ve seen in an American movie to a kabuki performance.

Chris Discusses His Himalayan Scare

Chris Hemsworth has fought all kinds of gods and monsters on the big screen as Thor, but in real life, he recently faced a much more dangerous enemy: altitude sickness. Hemsworth told Jimmy Kimmel on Thursday that his job involves so much traveling that he and wife Elsa Pataky rarely take vacations. However, they did make a recent trek to the Himalayas.

Standard procedure for such mountain-climbing requires spending a few days at various height milestones to allow bodies to acclimate to the higher altitudes and lack of oxygen, but even this didn’t really work for Hemsworth.

“We went to 2000 meters, then 3000, and I honestly started to kind of lose my mind,” Hemsworth said. “Just completely irrational, overly sensitive to the most trivial sort of silly things.”

According to Hemsworth, his wife started to notice something was wrong. He protested he was fine, though eventually the sickness became impossible to ignore.

“My breathing is getting worse, like Darth Vader meets Daffy Duck,” Hemsworth said. “She eventually ignores me, runs and tells the guards. They come in, take one look at me and say ‘get him off the mountain.’”

Turns out Hemsworth hadn’t acclimated well to the higher altitude. After getting a breathing mask and flying back down the mountain via helicopter, everything turned out fine, but it was a close call.

“Apparently the oxygen in my lungs, the next day would’ve been oxygen in my brain, and then good night,” Hemsworth said. “We wouldn’t be sitting here.”

“Maybe it’s because you’re so handsome,” Kimmel said. “You’re not meant to be up in the mountains away from others, you’re meant to be down amongst the people, bringing joy to their eyes.”

“Ghostbusters” Role Was Tailored Specifically For Chris

Chris Hemsworth was nervous. The Australian actor may be Thor, the god of thunder, but he was about to face off against four comic titans when he stepped on the Boston set of the Ghostbusters reboot last summer opposite Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones.

Turns out, the man had nothing to worry about.

Not only had director Paul Feig prepped Hemsworth for his role as the ladies’ dopey assistant, but he also provided him with a slew of jokes and told him he didn’t need to improv at all.

“I told him not to worry. He wouldn’t have to come up with anything if he didn’t want to,” says Feig.

When the four women sat down for Hemsworth’s character’s job interview scene, not only did he prove he was fully capable of ad-libbing back at them, he threw out jokes that Feig insists will wind up in the July release.

“I remember looking at [screenwriter] Katie [Dippold] like, “Did you write that for him?” And she said no. He just turned out to be this amazing improviser,” says Feig.

The director says he tailored the role more specifically for Hemsworth after he first met him. “The part was originally written as this guy who doesn’t really want the job, who is a little more snarky,” says Feig. “But Chris is so lovable, we thought it would be better if he’s a guy that earnestly wants a job but doesn’t know what he’s getting himself into. That made all the difference.”

It certainly had the proper effect on his castmates.

“After we filmed our first scene with him, Melissa and I went to the bathroom together and she said, ‘Does he have a team of writers in his pocket or something? What is going on?’ He was throwing out the most insane, hilarious stuff in the most deadpan, handsome way and it was just perfect,” says McKinnon. “Plus, he’s just a great guy. Big fan.”

Adds Wiig, “It was like we had known him for 20 years. We all fell in love with him. He does all these big action movies and dramas but to see him in this role, we were all just flipping out.”

Hemsworth will join the Ghostbusters on the big screen July 15. (Source)
