MGM’s financial woes are the stuff of legend at this point.
As long as I’ve lived in Los Angeles… just over twenty years at this point… MGM has been “in trouble.” There have been several major shifts in ownership, and who owns what, and the MGM library has been broken up and resold many times over. As a result, this latest round of MGM difficulty has been a fair amount of white noise for me, more of the same, with the notable exception of the fates of “Bond 23” and “The Hobbit.”
Those were the biggest stories tied up in this larger story, and as Greg Ellwood wrote last night, it looks like “Bond 23” has become terribly important to Sony. And why not? They had a major part in both “Casino Royale” and “Quantum Of Solace,” and they’ve gotten used to that James Bond money. They’ve also been part of laying some narrative groundwork that I hope pays off finally in this next film, and with Sony already in the Daniel Craig business in a big way with Fincher’s “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo,” it makes sense that they want to keep track of him and be part of scheduling his time over the next few years.
But now that the big questions are out of the way, there are a few other important issues on the table, and it looks like Sony may be riding to the rescue of some smaller films that need the help. In particular, “Red Dawn” and “Cabin In The Woods,” which have been missing in action for a while now, and which are both movies that deserve their day in court.

I don’t follow sports at all, but just saw this on Jaimie Alexander’s official Twitter, so I thought I’d post it here for you guys:
I’ve been told that the Thor Super Bowl spot will be shown in the 2nd quarter of the game. 🙂
You can follow her at http://twitter.com/JaimieAlexander. 🙂
According to various online sources, Chris and Elsa were married over the Christmas holiday. I don’t have any other details at this time but will post them once more information pops up online. Congratulations to the happy couple!
If a superhero is going to have a mentor, it should be someone major like Brando or The Dude. Sir Anthony Hopkins is another good one. Playing Odin in the big movie version of Thor, Sir Anthony enjoyed messing with beefy Chris Hemsworth.
“I’m glad I’m not young anymore because you see their insecurities and I always joke along with them,” Hopkins said while he was promoting the Woody Allen comedy You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger. “I say things like, ‘Is that the way you’re going to play it?’ Chris and I got to know each other but he was looking nervous and I said, ‘Oh, is that the way you’re going to play it?’ He said, ‘Yeah, is it okay?’ I said, ‘Well, it’s your career.’’

“Thor” isn’t due out until May 2011, but one of the film’s stars – Sir Anthony Hopkins – said fans can expect something very special.
“It’s colossal,” he told Access Hollywood’s Scott “Movie” Mantz at the Toronto International Film Festival, of the upcoming Marvel comic, which is heading to the big screen.
Anthony said Thor’s portrayer, Chris Hemsworth, really embodied the role of the Norse god and warrior.
“He’s terrific,” Anthony said. “He looks like he could conquer the universe.”

Chris Hemsworth is surfing the Hollywood waves, close behind fellow Aussie actor Sam Worthington.
The former Home and Away idol stars as the god of thunder in the 2011 movie Thor, directed by Kenneth Branagh and due to be released next May.
Hemsworth worked hard for the role of wielding Thor’s mighty hammer, including engaging in weapons training and ingesting protein shakes.
The 27-year-old actor is joining the likes of Avatar star Sam Worthington and True Blood star Ryan Kwanten on the Hollywood celebrity list.
His younger brother, Liam Hemsworth, is also rising in fame with his part in The Last Song and new movies in production including Arabian Nights.

With all the manly talk surrounding “Thor” star Chris Hemsworth, there’s enough testosterone in the collective conversation to fuel the spontaneous growth of a few new chest hairs.
All this is well and good of course, but Hemsworth’s “Home and Away” co-star/fellow Aussie Sharni Vinson recently took a moment to express a little girlish enthusiasm for the lesser-discussed ‘Thor’ conversation topics and namely Hemsworth himself and her reaction to him being cast as the God of Thunder.

Following his appearnace at Comic-Con, Chris Hemsworth left fanboys — and girls — in awe of his muscular “Thor†physique.
As it turns out, the fans aren’t the only ones who have taken a liking to this rising star — his co-star Natalie Portman is a big fan, too.
While promoting the film, Natalie, who plays Jane Foster, a nurse and the first love of Chris’ title character, spoke with AccessHollywood.com’s Laura Saltman about the Aussie actor and the upcoming fame he is sure to gain from this landing this action-packed role.
“He’s so grounded, kind and just a nice, normal person,†she said. “I know he’s going to be able to handle all of that with incredible grace. He already has.â€
Chris’ star status will change dramatically as he stars as “Thor,†the hammer-wielding superhero fans have come to love from the Marvel comic book. For the role, he bulked up in muscle mass to fill out his character’s nice, big red cape. He even shows off a long blonde wig.

Chris attended the Australians in Film 2010 Breakthrough Awards yesterday. I haven’t had a chance to collect any photos for the gallery yet, but you can preview some photos here and here if you need a little Chris fix today. 😉
The secrecy of director Kenneth Branagh’s adaptation of “Thor” has been so great, that even though filming is currently winding down, only a single shot of Chris Hemsworth in his Thor costume has emerged online.
And while Thor’s outfit appears to be taken directly from the recent “Thor” run by J. Michael Straczynski and Olivier Coipel, the costume was extremely uncomfortable, according to Hemsworth.
“I put the [costume] on and said ‘It’s not very comfortable, but it looks amazing, so it’s all good.'” during an interview with Superhero Hype. “And then a couple of weeks in, I thought ‘It’s getting more and more uncomfortable,’ and at the end of three, four months it was a pretty difficult thing to wake up and put on every morning. But it’s sells such an image in the picture. It does a lot of the work for you.”
